Frister & Rossmann Model D

A beautiful and unusually late example of the traditional transverse-shuttle sewing machine.

There is something rather special about a Frister & Rossmann sewing machine. Beautifully engineered, wonderfully decorative and built with the kind of confidence that only comes from knowing a machine was expected to last for generations, they have always been among our favourite vintage machines.

This particular machine is a Frister & Rossmann Model D, serial number 91,337, manufactured circa 1936.

The Model D is an especially interesting machine because it retained the traditional transverse-shuttle mechanism at a time when most manufacturers had already moved on to more modern designs. It is a lovely example of an earlier style of sewing-machine engineering continuing well into the 1930s, and it gives the machine a character all of its own.

Its glossy black enamel is decorated with beautiful gold floral detailing, including the distinctive gold D on the pillar. The decals remain remarkably bright and complete.

The machine sits in its original inlaid wooden base and comes with its domed wooden carrying case. The case shows honest age-related wear, including scratches, marks and fading, but this only adds to its charm. It has clearly travelled through life protecting the wonderful machine hidden beneath it.
