Jones originally advertised this machine as ‘The Prettiest Stitch Of Any Sewing Machine In Existence’. Not only did it win awards but it paved the way for the Jones Cylinder Shuttle, C.S machine to conquer the British market when it later carried the ‘Royal Warrant’.
This beautiful Empress Jones was called Cat Back, Serpentine or Swan Neck. Actually the original full name for this model when sold by Jones (under their own badge) was Empress Of India (later simply Empress). This particular very early model actually has Empress Of India on the bed of the machine.
The very early models (like this one) had a central tension post along the top arm of the machine and the decals on the bed which were later replaced with a hard wearing brass medallion. The later machines also had fibreglass gears which proved to be a real problem when one broke… which was quite often the case. This one has original metal gears!
This fantastic, very rare Jones Empress Of India MK1 comes with original case, original instructions, attachments, needles, JONES SEWING MACHINE CO THIMBLE and of course the signed book in which this actual machine is pictured!
It was the Empress Of India that put Jones on the map as a force to be reckoned with in sewing machine manufacturers.
This was the first of their big sellers. The original early model like this one with the central tension stud and Empress Of India on the bed is extremely rare and sought after, it is a prize in a few collections. We only have one in the Sewalot collection after 50 years of searching – and here it is!
