Singer 28K 1934

£429.00

Compact, beautifully decorated and remarkably capable, this is exactly the sort of machine that reminds us why these early Singers remain so loved more than ninety years after they were made.

This particular Singer 28K dates to 1934 and carries the serial number Y9,317,754.

The 28K was built around Singer’s dependable vibrating-shuttle mechanism and was designed to provide all the practicality of a full-sized domestic sewing machine in a slightly more compact form. Simple to thread, wonderfully smooth to operate and built with the strength expected from Singer, it remains an excellent machine for both beginners and experienced vintage-machine enthusiasts.

What immediately stands out on this example is the decoration. The glossy black enamel is covered with beautiful gold floral decals, extending across the bed, pillar and arm of the machine. The ornate silver-coloured faceplate is decorated with an engraved grape and vine design, while the polished handwheel and original wooden-handled crank complete the wonderfully traditional appearance.

The decals remain remarkably bright and detailed, and the machine has a lovely overall presence. There are small signs of age and use, as you would expect from a working machine of this age, but they do nothing to detract from its character – it really is in beautiful condition.

This machine comes with the original Singer Bentwood case. The case shows some honest age-related wear, including scratches, marks and areas of fading, but it has done its job of protecting the beautiful machine inside for more than ninety years.

Most importantly, this Singer 28K sews exactly as it should. It has been carefully cleaned, serviced and tested in our workshop and produces a beautiful, neat stitch. The hand crank turns smoothly and using it is every bit as satisfying today as it would have been when the machine was first made. In fact, dare we say it – this may be one of the finest stitches we’ve ever seen on a Singer 28k, it really does seem…. perfect.
