Singer Featherweight 222K – 1960 – With Original Provenance

There are Featherweights… and then there are 222Ks.

The Singer 222K is one of the most desirable vintage sewing machines Singer ever produced. Beautifully engineered, remarkably portable and considerably rarer than the famous 221 Featherweight, the 222K features Singer’s ingenious convertible free-arm design, allowing the sewing bed to be removed for cuffs, sleeves and other tubular work.

This particular machine is made even more special by the remarkable amount of its original history that has survived with it.

Sold New in London – January 1960

The original Singer paperwork records this machine as a Singer 222K1, serial number EL183733, purchased by Miss W. M. Hill of Burntwood Lane, London SW17, from the Singer shop at 26 High Street, Tooting, on 9th January 1960.

Even the original carrying case still retains Miss Hill’s identification tag.

It is increasingly unusual to find a 222K with this sort of provenance. We don’t simply know roughly when it was made – we know who owned it, where it was bought and when it first went home with its owner more than 66 years ago.

The Singer 222K

Manufactured at Singer’s famous Kilbowie factory in Clydebank, Scotland, the 222K was the ultimate development of the classic Featherweight.

Its removable bed transforms the machine into a genuine free-arm model within seconds, while retaining everything that made the Featherweight famous: portability, superb engineering and an exceptionally satisfying sewing experience.

This example retains its beautiful traditional black finish, gold detailing, Singer badge and polished ribbed faceplate.

Most importantly, it has been professionally and meticulously restored and serviced by Vintage Sewing Machines UK and is sewing beautifully, as shown by the stitch sample in the photographs.

An Exceptional Collection of Accessories

A considerable amount of the original equipment has survived with this machine, including its Singer instruction manual, accessory boxes, feet and attachments, bobbins, Singer oil tin and original boxed Singer embroidery hoop specifically for Class 222K machines.

The original Singer motor, period foot controller and carrying case are also present, together with the wonderful original paperwork belonging to Miss Hill.

Electrical Supply

This is an original UK-voltage machine (230–250V) and is supplied fitted with a UK plug.

It can also be used in countries with a different mains voltage using an appropriate step-up or step-down voltage converter, as required for the destination country. A simple plug-shape adapter alone is not sufficient where the local mains voltage differs.

A Very Special Featherweight

Any good Singer 222K is special. Finding one with its original case, accessories and paperwork documenting its sale in London in 1960 makes this a particularly lovely example.

It is a wonderfully complete piece of Singer history – but one which is still very much ready to do what it was built to do.

For additional peace of mind, the machine has been freshly PAT tested and has passed its electrical safety inspection, ready for its new owner.
